We bridge the water-energy-food nexus with forest & land restoration to provide biodiversity-based solutions in order to empower the local communities to sustainably thrive in the African continent which we serve.
Our next projects
Currently we are working to establish a pilot Agroforestry system in the Ashanti region of Ghana.

Vision

Mission

With a scientific approach, the AgroForestry team assesses, combines, multiplies, and shares different types of knowledge supporting new and ongoing business projects developed by TU eMpower Africa e.V.

Goal

We support local communities to build biodiversity-based ecosystems among the business projects developed by TU eMpower Africa e.V.

Our story

Our first steps started back in November 2021, being one of the newest teams inside TU eMpower e.V. Now we are working together with over 12 active members coming from five continents and with different backgrounds including: agroforestry, forestry, plant physiology, geographic information systems (GIS), agriculture, mechanical and electrical engineering, and business-economics.

TUMA AgroForestry team lead, William Aguirre-Ráquira, attending stakeholder day of the 9th session of the IPBES Plenary in Bonn, July 2, 2022.

From July 2-9, 2022, the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services), held its 9th session of the IPBES Plenary in 2022 in Bonn, Germany. The IPBES Plenary is composed representatives of its member and non-member states, UN organizations, non-governmental organizations, additionally, other organizations can attend as observers.

Since IPBES’ establishment in 2012, they have been instrumental in its role to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services, and further, receiving much attention due to the publication of high-profile, high-quality, comprehensive, and thorough assessments on a variety of biodiversity-related topics.

The goal of the TU eMpower Africa (TUMA) AgroForestry (AF) team strives to make impact within the same areas of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

William Aguirre-Ráquira, team lead for TUMA AgroForestry, participated in the stakeholders day on July 2, 2022. He brought back valuable insights from the event, and ideas on how TUMA can align with IPBES by contributing beneficial research through our project in Ghana.

On September 29, 2022, several members of the TU eMpower Africa (TUMA) AgroForestry (AF) team attended the Sustainable World 2022 event held at the LMU. The goal of the symposium is to provide a forum for next generation researchers of all levels to inform themselves further on diverse sustainability topics, hearing from passionate experts in the fields of ecology, economy and sociology, as well as bringing the opportunity to network with different local and international “green” initiatives.

TU eMpower Africa’s Executive Board members and volunteers were present at TUM’s Sustainability Day on October 27, 2022 at TUM’s main campus. This event covered a broad range of sustainability-related panel discussions such as the role of universities in the sustainable transformation of economy and society; and presentations on SDG-connected topics such as circular economy, green innovations, and the water-energy-food nexus – of which, TU eMpower Africa has made direct contributions through its work.

TUMA’s CEO, Wayne Chinembiri presented TUMA’s achievements and on-going projects to the participants. Additionally, TUMA’s AgroForestry team members, Obara Joshua and Linda Lungala shared more of AF’s ambition and contribution towards building nature-based solutions to more curious participants at the event.

We are happy to announce that TU eMpower Africa is now an official member of the FAO Mountain Partnership! The Mountain Partnership is part of the United Nations voluntary alliance of partners committed to working together to address the climate and biodiversity crises in mountains and ensure social and economic livelihood and well-being of mountain people, as well as the conservation and sustainable use of mountain ecosystems and resources – for the benefit of people and planet.

TUMA is one of five major organizations in Germany to have this honor. We are excited for the opportunity to enhance sustainable mountain development around the world through our projects.
